Holes - Louis Sachar Review & Synopsis
Synopsis
Stanley Yelnats is sentenced to dig holes at Camp Green Lake detention centre for stealing a pair of trainers. Stanley's quest to discover what he is digging for leads to danger and adventure and to a confrontation with his family's past.
Review
"If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers. In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat, sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity, the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck, thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!" Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet in diameter; learning how to get along with the Lord of the Flies-styled pack of boys in Group D; and fearing the warden, who paints her fingernails with rattlesnake venom. But when Stanley realizes that the boys may not just be digging to build character--that in fact the warden is seeking something specific--the plot gets as thick as the irony.
It's a strange story, but strangely compelling and lovely too. Louis Sachar uses poker-faced understatement to create a bizarre but believable landscape--a place where Major Major Major Major of Catch-22 would feel right at home. But while there is humor and absurdity here, there is also a deep understanding of friendship and a searing compassion for society's underdogs. As Stanley unknowingly begins to fulfill his destiny--the dual plots coming together to reveal that fate has big plans in store--we can't help but cheer for the good guys, and all the Yelnats everywhere. (Ages 10 and older) --Brangien Davis

4 hours 30 minutes, 4 CDs
Stanley Yelnats isn't so surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a juvenile detention center. After all, his family has been ridden with bad luck ever since a one-legged gypsy put a curse on his great-great grandfather. He is told that the hard labor he must perform...digging 5 foot holes in the dried up soil where Green Lake once sat...is meant to build character. But is soon becomes clear to Stanley that the warden is really using the boys to search for something very valuable. The story of the hidden treasure, alone with the warden, Stanley's friend Zero, and the curse on the Yelnats family are all part of a compelling puzzle that has taken generations to unravel.
Holes
As further evidence of his family's bad fortune which they attribute to a curse on a distant relative, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a hellish correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself.

Exploring "Holes" by Louis Sachar
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,0, Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg im Breisgau (Institut für Anglistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "I’m Jeff and I hate reading." (Wilhelm, 2008) This statement illustrates the problem teachers are faced with when teaching novels. When it comes to reading, students seem to be reluctant and not motivated to engage in a novel for a longer time. Many pupils do not enjoy reading and do not read in their leisure time. Therefore, one has to choose a novel carefully. If the novel does not appeal to the students, then there is no reason to teach it. In this term paper the novel Holes by Louis Sachar was chosen due to its topics and its learning potential. Holes tells the story of a young adult named Stanley who is sent to a bootcamp in the desert and has to dig holes as a punishment for a crime he did not commit. The book is about friendship, justice, racism and about revenge and love. All these themes are connected and intertwined by a superior curse that decides on the fates of the characters. Louis Sachar, born in 1954, is an author for children’s books and he wrote several novels. His book Holes, published in 1998, received many awards including the National Book Award, which is a prestigious book price in the USA. Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake (2003) and Small Steps (2006) are sequels to the novel.

Literature and ELT: Louis Sachar's "Holes"
Lesson Plan from the year 2012 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Literature and ELT (Fachdidaktik-Kurs), language: English, abstract: Bei dieser Arbeit für den Fachdidaktik-Kurs "Literature and ELT" handelt es sich um eine Didaktiksierung des Abenteuerromans "Holes" von Louis Sachar (ab 4./5. Lernjahr) mit einigen außergewöhnlichen Ideen zu Übungen/Aktivitäten rund um "Holes" (Dauer ca. 4 St.), welche auch auf andere literarische Werke angewandt werden können (creating wanted posters, telephone conversations with the author, ...). Inhalt: Introduction: Why teach literature (or Literature?) in ELT; Choice of text; Work plan for four lessons; Conclusion; Bibliography; Appendix/Work sheets: 'dig it', character sketch, 'mad lib', discuss-decide-survive, filling in the holes: questions, create your own 'wanted poster', reading log. Auszug: Choice of text We shouldn’t teach great books; we should teach a love of reading. (B. F. Skinner) I have chosen the novel Holes by Louis Sachar with the quotation above in mind: even though it might not be classified as one of the ‘great books’, i.e. of ‘(high) Literature’, it is definitely one of those books that can serve to ‘teach a love of reading’. Holes is the exciting story of Stanley Yelnats (mind the palindrome!), an overweight boy who is unjustly sent to Camp Green Lake, a boys’ juvenile detention centre. Stanley knows that this is due to a curse on his ‘no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather’, who did not fulfil a promise he had made to Madame Zeroni. At the camp, Stanley and six other boys are forced to dig holes every day in order to pay their debt to society. However, Stanley soon finds out that there is more than ‘character building’ going on [...]. The novel and its main themes (friendship, racism, justice, fate, etc.) can be exploited in many appealing ways for classroom reading. [...] In the open learning sequence I have prepared, two basic approaches to reading a book in class are incorporated. First, there is the ‘classical’ approach with its well-established, successful activities, whereby the focus of assessment is (as is usual on an upper-secondary level) on both language and content. On the other hand, the activities on the second work sheet focus on the themes dealt with in the book. Since friendship, bullying, racism, etc. are issues in (nearly) every teenager’s life, it can be motivating for the students to deal with these topics from a personal point of view, in a creative way. The activities on both work sheets are designed in a way that allows the students to plan which tasks to do when themselves.
